Animal Safari Baby Shower Cake

This Animal Safari Baby Shower Cake has a lot of fun features.

The cake itself is a 12" hexagon approximately 6" high. The size and height alone make the cake interesting to look at. The cake is covered in white Satin Ice fondant with baby pink zebra stripes.

Inspiration

The idea for the cake was inspired by the animal safari baby shower themed invitation and decorations.

Baby Animals

The baby elephant and giraffe were hand-sculpted from gum paste and painted with gel food coloring.

Plaques

The plaques on the side of the cake and on top of the cake were also based on the invitations. The edges of the plaques were piped in black royal icing onto parchment. We placed the invitation underneath the parchment to provide a template for the piped black outline. The interior was flooded with thinned white royal icing. When the plaques were dried, we cut out the invitation to make a stencil to airbrush the pink giraffes and elephants onto the plaques.

We used a black food marker to the "It's a girl!" and "Welcome Baby Myla."

The crib, blanket and canopy were hand-cut from gum paste and imprinted using impression mats.

The baby was hand-sculpted from gum paste. The baby's face is hand-painted with gel food coloring.

The baby's bib is lace made with SugarVeil.

SugarVeil was also used to make the canopy and lace on the crib and the pink and black cheetah-print fabric at the base.
